This is kind of like paint by number but with little square stickers instead. It gives it the mosaic look. Rose, mommy, and daddy worked on it together Sunday afternoon, then Rose finished it up today.

belated post about Mother's Day

I kept meaning to post about my wonderful Mother's Day. The day started with bed in breakfast prepared by Rose and Daddy. Then we went to church, where Rose made me some pretty tissue paper flowers. We had lunch at Mellow Mushroom Pizza.....which was an excellent choice b/c the place was practically empty....I guess most moms don't pick pizza as their Mom's Day lunch :) Then we went to Lowe's where I picked out this fern.Rose asked if she could have a plant that she could take care of all by herself. She picked this one b/c it had a cactus Rose (after we didn't let her get a Rose bush).

The afternoon was spent relaxing at home. Chad made curry chicken and rice for supper. It was a very pleasant day!

I didn't get to spend the day with my mommy. My sisters took her out to lunch and went to her house that evening. I sent her a care package, which is nice but not the same as spending time with her.

Rose and Andrew were in the 3 year olds choir at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church this school year.
Tonight was the last night till August.

Also......I guess most people just use the dvd teacher but I like to do EVERY single activity and use all the same posters and do EVERYTHING with Rose and Andrew in person that the kids on the dvd do. I found that the lesson plans included some of these but not all, so I preview the 3 hour video on fast speed and make notes of everything else she uses and see if there are extra things I need to make or gather before the lesson. During the lesson, I pause the dvd and do it with Rose and Andrew and then continue. I also add some of my own teaching time with reviews, activities, etc. So yes it is extra work but I still love it and think it is so worth it. They have fun while they are learning but I still think I like it even more than they do :)

Soup Beans and Cornbread

Okay I am 30something years old and yesterday was the very FIRST time I made soup beans or cornbread by myself. If you not from the south then you probably have no idea what I am talking about. But it is just what it sounds like plus you add some onion to your bowl.

My dad's family was very poor when he was going up and they lived on this (literally). My mom's family was poor as well but they were farmers and alway had meat and veggies from the farm, so soup beans was more of a treat for her. When I was going up we ate this pretty regularly.

...and now I have ventured into making it myself. I never knew it was so simple to make. so now I think I will make it every so often. It makes me think of my parents and grandparents when I was a child and days on the farm...full of love and laughter.

The beans are separate from the cornbread:

the soup is made from pinto beans.
You put some soup in your bowl....each person gets their own cornbread to crumble into the soup b/c some like more than others...then each person cuts up some onion over their bowl again b/c some like more than others or no onion.
It is a southern dish and you probably wouldn't like it. Chad likes it, but I have yet to see anything that Chad doesn't like....oh wait I take that back....he doesn't like fried okra (yes, it too is a southern thing)

Vacation

We had a fabulous family vacation on Amelia Island. We ended up spending the whole week there. Oliver and Pat invited us to their condo and we had a blast. In the summer they rent out their condo for $2,400 a week....so we got a real bargain by staying with them for free!!! They are a wonderful couple in their 70's. Chad met him at GSU and started a friendship.

We spent our days relaxing, swimming in one of the many pools, hanging out on the beach, going on nature walks, and having fun. It was our BEST family vacation yet!! I condensed a whole week to under 6 minutes in this video montage....enjoy!

the Beach

Saturday we went to a choral performance and art show at the LDS church....one of Chad's friends was singing and invited us to come. Rose did very well especially considering the performance was over an hour long ....she sat and watched and clapped after each song...towards the end she laid down across mommy and daddy's laps. Afterwards she perked up and had to view and comment on every single art piece.
Today Chad and I subbed in Rose's Sunday School class again. It was the best ! We had a fabulous class!
Now we are packing because....

We are heading to the beach in the morning!! Rose is sooo excited (and mommy and daddy are too!) We were going to camp on Tybee Island but one of Chad's friends invited us down to his condo on Amelia Island so we will be going there. We may still end up camping on Tybee b/c we do have to drive right by there. But we are going to play it by ear this week and just go do whatever we feel. (which is fun to do sometimes, but you know me I like to PLAN PLAN PLAN....so I am just letting go and being free this week.) We plan on returning sometime toward the end of the week. I am sure I will have a ton of photos to post when I get back!!

Homeschool Chic

I bet you didn't know that 'homeschool chic' is the new hot look for livingrooms and sunrooms everywhere. .......Well, maybe not.....but that is what we have going on here.

At first our school area was pretty much contained in our sunroom (which is open to our livingroom) but has recently ran into our livingroom as well, since we now use the tv for the Abeka DVDs and I co-teach with Mrs. Wasser on the dvd. (Side note - I am so loving 4 year old Kindergarten!! Rose has already learned the days of creation, phonics for the letter i, Genesis 1:1, and more.....and we just started!!) Anyways, this post is about our livingroom decor.

I wanted a a board next to the tv...can't afford to buy one...so I made one! Part is a dry erase board turned sideways then I made a giant felt board out styrofoam sheets (ordered online) and pink felt purchased at the fabric store. I think it turned out alright, but most importantly it serves its function perfectly!


I put up a May wall calendar and decorated the wall around it, of course including Rose and Andrew's names. This will replace the monthly bulletin boards I was doing on a different wall. Oh and I don't have a pic but our front hall is lined with Rose's artwork and school work.....oh so very home school chic!

Maybe one day when we get a house we can have a separate home school area to where it is not so in your face but for now we are going to live with the home school chic look!

New Playground

Our apartment complex put in a new playground and Rose had fun exploring it!

(We learned that we must always remember bug repellent!!! The mosquitos were ridiculous....luckily I have a natural non toxic bug repellent:)
