Week 10 and trick or treating

This week we learned about the Yanomamo people group, Brazil and other South America people and places, the Amazon, the rain forest floor, and mokeys and apes.  We finished up our reading on Cameron Townsend.  Rose enjoyed learning about his dedication to translate the Bible into native languages for people all over the world.

We met up on Reformation day with our friends, the Becks.  We ate pumpkin shaped pizzas and goodies.  Then took the girls trick or treating.  The girls had a fun 'candy auction' afterwards.

We bagged up her less favorite candies and added a granola bar for our homeless bags that we keep in the car.  We will add a bottle of water too (and maybe something else of more nutritional value).  

Rose doesn't like for us to pass up anyone holding a cardboard sign along the roadside without giving them at least something.

We have a long narrow storage closet upstairs.  Rose turned it into her 'lair'.  It is now her 'Reading Lair'.  She decorated it with some of her photos and trinkets.  I helped her add a crib mattress and some blankets to make it more cozy.  She has really enjoyed hanging out in there (among all the storage containers) and reading, reading, reading.  

Week 2 of Grade 3 and a Hot Air Balloon

Chad was given 2 VIP tickets to the Rib Cook Off.  It includes all you can eat ribs and sides.  So on Monday Rose and daddy spent the afternoon there, again.

...and of course, made time to play in the fountains.

Rose's favorite book this week was Kingdom Tales.  (A classic collection of tales that use allegory to reveal truths about the Kingdom of God.)

Each week I will try to share at least one of her school work pages.  This week it is her John 3:16 poster.

This week we are learning about Latitude and Longitude, Elevation and Depth, how to read Physical and Political Maps, Biomes around the world, Oxygen and Water Cycles, and much more.

Rose started her piano lessons.  She is thrilled with her lessons and with her sweet teacher, Mrs. Kristen.

For this weeks play date with Carissa, we went to the Discovery Museum.  The girls had such a great time.

For handicrafts this week, we finished up this pillow.  Rose latch hooked it two years ago and we never did anything with it.  I was never quite sure how to turn it into a pillow, so I kept putting it off.  We decided to end the procrastination and just give it a whirl.  It turned out great and Rose is ready to do another latch hook project.

On Friday we had Fari over for dinner.  He is Chad's new colleague at UNR.  He told us a lot about Indonesia and even showed us photos and videos especially about Bali.

On Saturday morning we were able to watch the Great Air Balloon Race from the comfort of our house.  Then to our surprise, one of the balloons landed on our street.  Rose and daddy helped pack up the balloon. Rose even got to get in the basket and turn the fire on.  Very nice!

On Saturday we went to the first UNR home football game of the season.

Rose got to make a world cake as part of her world studies.  She learned/reviewed all the continents and oceans.  We waited until Sunday to make it so it could be part of our fellowship meal at church assembly.

Yay, a trip to Kentucky

Rose and mommy were able to go to KY for two weeks.  We love visiting Grandpa and Grandma Irvin!  Daddy stayed home and worked on research, etc.  He also helped friends put in rock landscaping and other projects while we were gone.

  

As you view these photos of us in Kentucky, it can not be captured how miserably HOT it was.  It was over 100 degrees almost every day while we were there.  Hot and humid.  The heat did alter a lot of our plans.  But in spite of the oppressive heat we had a fabulous trip.  We will think twice before visiting in the middle of the summer again, though.

In Kentucky we got to spend a day with Aunt Jen and family before they moved to Arizona.

She also loved the green grass!  We miss the green.  Even though Grandpa said it was a 'brown' year due to the drought, it was still 'green' to us.

A fun day with mommy, Aunt Kiki, Kyle, and Jordan included seeing the movie 'Brave'.  Yipee!

The next day was spent with mommy, Grandma, and Grandpa at Shaker Village.

 We enjoyed learning about their history and how they lived.

Then Clara got to spend a few days with Rose at the farm.  Rose and Clara have been friends since they were 1 year old.  What fun!!

We really enjoyed our visit to Kentucky and seeing so many friends and family.  It was a great treat!
